How to feed if a cat or dog has been starving for a long time

In no case should you leave a lot of food for a hungry animal. Feed often, but in small portions. If you have ready-made food for a dog or cat, the package can contain recommendations for daily feeding depending on the animal’s weight. For the first two days, give half of the daily norm, dividing it into 5-8 meals. After 2 days, increase the dose by 10% and so bring it to the daily norm, but keep 5 meals a day for up to 2 weeks. Then you can switch to 4 meals a day and so on, gradually moving the animal to 2 meals a day.

If you do not have the opportunity to feed a dog you have met several times, then try to scatter the food over as large an area as possible. If the animal has to search for food for a long time, this will slow the time in which the dog eats too much.

If you have the opportunity, feed the food soaked. For one measure of food, use about two measures of water. Wait for the food to absorb as much water as possible. Do not give animals fatty food or dairy products right away.

With natural food, use the same logic. For a medium dog (approximately knee-high), you can start with 1 tablespoon 5-8 times a day, increasing the dose by 10% every 2 days. Adjust the dose depending on the size of the animal, paying attention to its appetite and well-being. Do not immediately give the animal very fatty food or dairy products. Bones greatly damage an animal’s esophagus; dogs cannot be fed with them.

Find any dish or container into which water can be poured. If you have water with you, pour a small amount so the animal can drink at that moment, and leave this container under the closest drainpipe to you. If there are no water drainage systems around, look for a place where water can collect after rain: for example, it may be the slope of a roof, a house, or auxiliary buildings.
